The Liquid Lipstick Longevity Test

Liquid lipsticks have been around for quite a long time; Maybelline’s Superstay 24 Hour Lip Colours are the earliest formula that I remember. However nowadays every company seems to have developed their own liquid lipsticks, which they believe to be better than their competitors.

I have seven different liquid lipsticks currently in my collection and today I wanted to put them to the test against each other to decide which is the longest last and most comfortable liquid lipstick.

Each formula will be put through an eating test and the test will end as soon as the lipstick has faded away.

Collection Velvet Kiss Moisturising Lip Cream- £2.99

Shade: Caramel 2

This formula is beautiful to work with. You get a decent amount of pigment from one swipe. I did wear this out to the shops and had a very cheeky meal out. Although the lipstick lasted quite well through the meal, I did notice that half of the lower lip and the outer corners of my upper lip had worn away from eating food.

That being said, 5 hours of wear-time is still pretty awesome. This was a great result for a really cheap product.

Bare Minerals Gen Nude Matte Liquid Lip Colour- £17

Shade: Swag

This formula is another that I really enjoy using. Unlike the other liquid lipsticks however this isn’t a true matte and feels a lot creamier. This does stay put and lasted the quite common 5 hours before fading completely. The Bare Minerals formula does not dry my lips out and actually feels quite hydrating for a matte product. There is a reason why I have so many of these!

Tanya Burr Matte Lip- £5.99

This formula looks beautiful when it’s first applied, however this is probably the most drying out of the formulas in this list since I was really aware of it being there after about 10 minutes and it just kept getting dryer; it never got to the Makeup Revolution Matte Luxe stage of dryness however I didn’t like this as much as some of the others. I actually called the experiment on this one to an end after an hours. It began crumbling around the wrinkles in my lips, which enhanced the look of dryness on my lips. I love the colour of this lipstick but the formula does need to be improved slightly.

The Body Shop Matte Lip Liquid- £6

Shade: Crete Carnation

This is such a lovely formula. They’re really comfortable to wear and don’t dry out the lips at all. The shade range is gorgeous, and there is something for everyone. I did apply this quite early in the evening before a night shift. By 10pm I noticed that it was beginning to fade and looked quite crusty in places, although still felt comfortable. It was completely gone by 11pm. This only lasted 4 hours. It wasn’t as long-lasting as some of the others, but the formula is just so comfortable to wear.

Smashbox Always On Liquid Lipstick- £19

Shade: Big Spender

This formula is definitely one of the main favourites. It feels really comfortable and applies really neatly. It is extremely pigmented, and is a true matte once dry without making your lips look aged. This lasted 5 hours  before beginning to fade, although this was still wearable; it only faded in the centre of my lip, and smudged slightly on the outer corners. Still a really great result.

Bourjois Rouge Edition Velvet- £7.99

Shade: It’s Redding Men!

I couldn’t believe how long this lasted! This has been the queen of the liquid lipsticks so far; seven hours! Oh my God! This is how long that I would expect a liquid lipstick to last. These Bourjois Rouge Edition Velvet’s feel so comfortable to wear and are so opaque with one swipe. These have been around a while so there are so many colours available. I really love them a lot.

Nyx Soft Matte Lip Cream- £6

Once again, this is a really comfortable formula to wear. It applies beautifully, although you do need about two or three layers to keep it opaque. This did wear away quite quickly however it didn’t do it in a patchy way, keeping things quite even. My lips didn’t feel dry at all whilst wearing this either. Nyx are definitely a lovely formula for the price.

And that is the end of the experiment. The reigning queen of longest lasting liquid lipstick was the Bourjois Rouge Edition Velvets, and surprisingly Tanya Burr’s Liquid Lipstick lasted the least without having a few issues. I did discover that the average wear time for most liquid lipsticks was around 5 hours; and these were all tested during meal times.

What is your favourite formula of liquid lipsticks? Do you find a similar wear time with any of the ones that I tried?

Have a nice day guys!

    1. Yea it is. But I suppose a lot of the ones that I tried are quite new formulas. Bourjois has been around a while with the velvet rouge formula so it’s had time to adapt. I’m sure the others will improve over time. Thanks for the comment xx

  1. Lovely comparisons! I recommend trying the Beauty Bakerie Lip Whips, rediculously long lasting and although it is drying, you can add lip balm over it without disturbing it which softens them back up again! Xx
